It's one of those days. One of those days where luck seems to be in a horse race with your own stupidity to see which can drive you crazy first.
I had the kids in the car by just after 9 a.m. to get to Nutmeg's 10:30 a.m. doctor's appointment. Since I had accidentally double-booked her -- the library was having a free dance class for her age group and we are shopping for a dance class for her so I really wanted to check it out -- I was hoping we'd get in and out early.
Except when we were halfway there I realized I had forgotten the form that the doctor needs to fill out to certify that Nutmeg doesn't have the plague nor the bird flu so they will let her into preschool. Which starts in 3 weeks, which, yikes, and yes, that yikes will soon get its own post.
So, back home, and please, oh higher power that judges our parenting, please do not notice while I leave the kids strapped into their seat in the car for just a second while I run inside.
At the doctor's office, Nutmeg has a grand old time playing with another little girl while I fill out paperwork. And then the receptionist wants to know if I have switched Nutmeg's medical group with our insurance, which I have not. Yes, that's right -- even though I had to reschedule Filbertine's first appointment at this very office two months ago for the SAME EXACT REASON, I forgot that I needed to change Nutmeg's medical group. And, as always, the people at the insurance company say the change will not take effect until the first of the month.
The first of the month being right when Nutmeg is to start preschool.
So we leave the doctor's office, unexamined, and Nutmeg is for some reason crying that she doesn't get the opportunity to get her temperature taken and maybe get some shots. I call the library, but sure enough, that free dance class is starting to wind down and by the time we got there it would be over.
Since the kids are already strapped in the car and I am determined to salvage this day, I suggest we check out Oak Park's children's museum. My GPS directory doesn't seem to have the listing, but I know what street it's on -- the exact other side of town. I drive over there and drive up and down that street from one end of town to the other, but I never find it. Finally, I 411 the number and call, and sure, they can give me the address, but no, they are not open today.
Naturally, this third disappointment of the day is giving Nutmeg emotional whiplash. She calls for a stop at Dunkin Donuts, and what can I say? I'm whipped.
I did, however, have the foresight to throw her bathing suit into the bag this morning, so at least we stop at the pool where she has a moderately good time. And where I dial up her Chicago doctor's office (an hour's drive away) and secure the only August appointment they have. Which is of course at the same time as my next appointment with the eye specialist. And yeah, the eyes are still bothering me.
At this point, I think we all need a picture post to cheer us up!
In the yard, in outfits one of my former coworkers sent. Note Nutmeg's wicked look:
Nutmeg in the hammock/swing my parents brought us from Mexico. The swing hangs from our lovely (and sure to be expensive in the long run) maple tree.
These 2 are taken by Nutmeg (with our camera, not her Fisher Price one). Mommy in the foreground, my grandmother's cousin Marion in the background:
Not a bad portrait of the baby sister!
Now that Epu's computer is set up, I think I have some house pics too, but I'll save those for another day.
We’re not going anywhere.

More power to you for pushing on to find something to accomplish during the day of errands-gone-awry! If nothing else, you've managed to have two extremely adorable and talented children. Nothing to sneeze at.
